چکیده

For at least partially ordered three-way tables, it is well known how to arithmetically decompose Pearson’s X2 P statistic into informative components that enable a close scrutiny of the data. Similarly well-known are smooth models for two-way tables from which score tests for homogeneity and independence can be derived. From these models, both the components of Pearson’s X2 P and information about their distributions can be derived. Two advantages of specifying models are first that the score tests have weak optimality properties and second that identifying the appropriate model from within a class of possible models gives insights about the data. Here, smooth models for higher-order tables are given explicitly, as are the partitions of Pearson’sX2 P into components. The asymptotic distributions of statistics related to the components are also addressed.

Partial Association Components in Multi-way Contingency Tables and Their Statistiical Analysis

In analyses of contingency tables made up of categorical variables, the study of relationship between the variables is usually the major objective. So far, many association measures and association models have been used to measure  the association structure present in the table. Although the association measures merely determine the degree of strength of association between the study varia...

Analysis of singly ordered two-way contingency tables

Pearson’s statistic is investigated for nominal-ordinal two-way contingency tables in which we wish to test for identical rows. The statistic is expressed as a sum, the first summand of which is a statistic given by Yates (1948), and examines location effects for the nominal category. The second and subsequent summands reflect the corresponding moments: for example, dispersion, skewness, kurtos...

The Use and Misuse of Chi-Square: Lewis and Burke Revisited

The proper use of Karl Pearson's chi-square for the analysis of contingency tables is reviewed. The 1949 article by Lewis and Burke, who cited nine sources of error in the use of chi-square, is updated. Research on the application of the chi-square statistic is examined and supplementary and alternative approaches are discussed. Emphasis is placed on techniques that are of use to the practicing...

Bootstrap tests for independence in two-way ordinal contingency tables

For the analysis of an r by c contingency table having ordered row categories and ordered column categories, a bootstrap method is applied for the model-based likelihood ratio test for independence. A model-based likelihood ratio chi-square statistic and the statistic of the maximum eigenvalue of a Wishart matrix are also discussed. A simulation study is performed to compare the proposed method...

Analysis of Ordered Categorical Data Using the Sas® System

In this talk we describe a method for combining a measure of association from several 2xC contingency tables. The columns in the 2xC tables are assumed to be ordered and the method uses the weighted least squares methodology of Grizzle, Starmer and Koch (1969). The method uses a transformation of the gamma statistic, a statistic proposed for the analysis of ordered contingency tables by Goodman...
